Kiosk Universal

There are around 11 bars in La Boqueria, and we’re not brave enough to go out on a limb to say this is the best.

Still, the fresh seafood on offer seems to attract as many locals as tourists, and it is pretty darned good. (See the Boqueria website below to locate it in the market).

Eldiset

Interior of El Diset wine bar in El Born

In an area brimming with wine bars, Eldiset is always busy, which should tell you something. The focus is on Catalan wines, and the staff will help you find something to suit your tastes – it helps that there are four choices each of whites and reds by the glass as well as a couple of cavas. The food arguably plays second-fiddle to the wines, though the cheese platter is pretty good.

Bar Lobo

Bar Lobo is just off La Rambla, and not too far into deepest, darkest El Raval, so you know there are going to be tourists. Still, it’s also on the local radar.

I have a a love/maybe-not-quite-love relationship with the place. When it is on, it can be great, and for me the trigger point is how busy they are: If you have to wait for a table – no bookings here – I’d suggest somewhere else, because the systems fall apart a bit when the place is full.

That said, if you avoid the plentiful deep fried menu items, there are some real gems – the tuna tataki is really quite fabulous, for instance.

I’d opt for indoor seating because the place is full of tourists, and the square in front sees a constant flow of often pushy buskers.
