Komo en Kasa

Hole-in-the-wall take-away coffee joint.

Unfortunately Gustavo – Barcelona’s friendliest barista – has lost his battle with the authorities, and no longer has any window seats. Shame.

The friendly service remains, however. Plus, the empiñadas are hard to resist, and there is now some delicious – and excellent value – take-away options.

Federal Café

On-trend Federal Café attracts the hipster set

An Australian-themed hipster café in Parliament street, that’s not too hampered by its coolness.

Okay – you may have to fight your way past the computer-wielding coffee drinkers who treat the joint like a co-working space, but it is worth it. The brunches are excellent, and lunch is not shabby either. Plus coffee and cakes. What’s not to like?

Kangaroo burger at Federal Café

The burgers are excellent, and while a kangaroo burger sounds completely out of place here, it is one of the best burgers in Barcelona.

Apparently there are queues on the weekends. (There’s another outlet in the Gothic quarter.)

Viblioteca

The name gives the game away – Viblioteca is a wine bar. But it is so much more than that. In a space not much bigger a double garage, Viblioteca seats about 30, and somehow from behind the bar the small team conjures up incredible sharing plates.

There’s no stove in the ‘kitchen’, so no grilled or fried dishes, but it doesn’t matter – smoked sardines on toast with idizibal cheese, tuna tataki and avocado salad, a brilliant deconstructed caprese salad, confit potato with jamon and a poached egg are just some of the many highlights here.

The owner is an oenophile and will help you choose wines by the glass or bottle – she has loads that aren’t on the list. The prices are reasonable and there are around 50 different cheeses to choose from to finish. Absolute gold. Bookings essential.
